GOTHIC

Beside universities another secular buildings are castle, developing from ancient fortifications as defensive residents of monarchs, lords, bishops and knights to comfort style. Proportions are tall and slender with common shapes of square and equilateral triangle; a lot of biblical numbers such as 3,7,12 are used in doorways, windows and exterior bays. Like fortresses, castles were sited for security and protections of territory usually in hills or along the defense line along the river. European Cathedrals are located in the center of the towns surrounded by lawns and trees.
Best sample of Gothic design is Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, visually light because of big windows, the height of the pointed arches, and large opening in tower; build with ideal mathematical proportions, thinner and taller that those buildings from the past. In the center is big rose window with stained glass that filters colored light to the interiors.
Cathedrals and others important buildings are build from the local stone or brick. Cathedrals interiors same as exteriors promote unity, lightness, weightlessness, openness emphasizes the mystery of faith. Manuscript from that period shows that interiors were richly, colorfully decorated with textile hangings all around but have very little furniture. Surviving example of furniture are very rare ; few example include only some pieces of seating , tables, storage and beds heavily decorated with carvings ; nobles rather move from place to place rooms may have rich treatments and wall hangings but furniture were only few.
